Crowns Q&A

What is a dental crown?

Dr. Ahn carefully places a dental crown on top of your damaged tooth to act like a cap or cover.

Dr. Ahn might recommend a dental crown to:

  • Cover a dental implant
  • Protect and fix a discolored, badly shaped, broken, chipped, or damaged tooth
  • Hold a dental bridge securely in place

Dr. Ahn attaches your dental crown on top of your original tooth. A dental crown that’s fitted properly should cover the visible portion of your tooth above your gum line.

Are there different kinds of crowns?

Crowns can be made from several different dental materials, such as:

  • Ceramic
  • Gold or another alloy
  • Stainless steel
  • Resin
  • Porcelain fused to metal

Ridgecrest Dentistry provides different types of effective dental crowns, including same-day CEREC zirconia and porcelain crowns. Zirconia is the strongest dental material on the market.

The CEREC (chairside economical restoration of esthetic ceramics) technology involves the in-office scanning, designing, and milling of aesthetically beautiful all-ceramic crowns. This occurs in just one office visit that typically takes fewer than a few hours.

Dr. Ahn digitally scans your teeth and sends the information and data to an in-office milling machine where your custom crown is created right there and then.

What is the procedure for dental crowns?

Traditional crowns typically require a few office visits. Dr. Ahn sends your impressions to a lab where your crowns are created. This usually takes a week or two. Then you return to Ridgecrest Dentistry when your crowns are ready, and Dr. Ahn cements your crowns to your teeth.

For advanced CEREC crowns, in just one office visit, Dr. Ahn usually removes the damaged parts, and shapes your tooth to prepare it so it’s ready to fit your restoration.

After preparing your tooth, Dr. Ahn uses the special intraoral CEREC camera to take precise detailed mapping images of your tooth and convert the images into a computerized 3D model. Dr. Ahn uses this 3D model to design your restoration and sends the data to the in-office milling machine. The machine fabricates your new tooth from an all-ceramic block.

The milling process usually takes fewer than 45 minutes to complete. Dr. Ahn might stain your crown so it better matches your teeth, before polishing or glazing your crown in a special furnace. For the final step, Dr. Ahn cements the crown to your teeth.

CEREC crowns are long-lasting: If you take good care of your crown, you can expect it to last up to 10 years or longer.
